If you thought that real nappies (or washable nappies) involved a lot of hassle and expense we hope you'll be delighted by the advances that have been made over recent years.

Real nappies have truly evolved to become something that you can use without impacting on your precious free time.

Gone are the days of boil-washes and scrubbing and safety pins!

We've assembled a range of nappies and accessories that help everyone to use real nappies.

Before you start.

Prewash your nappies before using them for the first time, this will make them more absorbent. Check whether a particular coloured nappy will run before putting it in with your whites. Pre-washing your cloth nappies gets rid of any manufacturing dust and dirt, like your bath towels they maybe less absorbent at first, but a good warm wash will help with this. Do not use fabric conditioners or softeners, if you wish to make you washable nappies smell nicer try using a few drops of lavender oil in the fabric dispenser.

Putting nappies on.

Put a liner inside the nappy - please make sure that it is either a washable liner made from fleece, hemp or silk, or a bio-degradable one. Fasten the nappy securely around the baby. Cover with a wrap. (Wraps can be reused unless dirty or if they have been in use for a day.) Check that none of the nappy or liner is sticking out of the wrap, this is the biggest cause of leaks,.

Taking real nappies off.

Unfasten the wrap. If it is not dirty, you can use it with the next nappy. Undo the nappy. Unless it is very dirty, leave it in place while cleaning baby's bottom. Wipe the baby. You can use cloth wipes with water and wash them with the nappies, using washable wipes means that you aren't using heavily fragranced wipes on sensitive skin. Remove the dirty nappy and set to one side. Put a clean nappy on. Don't forget to smile and chat to your baby whilst doing this!!

Disposing of nappy.

If using a fleece liner and there is solid waste on it, remove the liner and empty the waste into the toilet. If using disposable liners, remove and dispose. Put the nappy (and fleece liner) into your bucket or bag.

Nappy buckets and soaking.

Any bucket with a lid will do as a nappy bucket. A nappy mesh is a mesh bag that hangs inside the bucket so that you can lift out all the nappies together when you come to wash them. Soaking nappies removes some of the waste before washing. However, you don't need to soak your nappies, especially if you're washing at least once every two days. Soaking with tea-tree oil or bleach will affect the colour of coloured nappies. Do not to soak wraps.

Washing.

Check that velcro fastenings are folded down before washing, to prevent them catching on the nappies. Take care to wash nappies and wraps at the correct temperature, today most nappies and wraps can be washed comfortably at 30-40c. However 60°C wash is adequate for reasons of hygiene, should your child have an infection. You don't need to boil-wash - this damages wraps and the elastic in shaped nappies. Washing powders with bleach in them will affect the colour in coloured washable nappies. Many people find that a non-biological washing powder is gentler on their baby's skin. You might find a rinse or pre-wash helps keep the nappies looking bright, especially if you don't soak the nappies before washing.

Drying.

Cloth nappies can be dried like other clothes, but do not tumble-dry wraps or place them on a hot radiator. Hanging nappies up outside makes them feel softer and uses less energy than tumble drying. Ten minutes in a tumble drier will soften up nappies that have been air dried..

Wiltshire WIldlife Trust - The Trust’s Real Nappy Network is one of several projects that aim to help reduce waste in Wiltshire, in this case by promoting the use of washable nappies that can be used again and again.

We can forget the horror stories about boiling nappies and messy, smelly nappy buckets. Re-usable nappies today offer parents real choice by being easy to use and clean, safe and cheap. They also come in a range of colours and patterns that is sure to please the most discerning of mothers and babies.

The Trust has teamed up with Wiltshire County Council and CRED (Community Recycling and Development Fund) to set up a cash back scheme to help encourage people to switch to, and keep using real nappies.

Wiltshire and Swindon resident parents are entitled to up to £30 cash back for each baby under the age of two when they purchase washable nappies (subject to terms and availability). For more information click on the link below.

Even without the discount, cloth nappies can work out considerably cheaper than disposables, an important factor for young families on a budget. The Trust's Real Nappy Network Co-ordinators Jacky Thomas and Kate Robinson can:

- Put you in touch with a local agent or volunteer who can tell you about the realities of using cloth nappies.

- Demonstrate and loan you a range of nappies to try at home.

- Tell you about local stockists and about laundries available in your area.

- Explain the cash back scheme for those wishing to buy washable nappies (download details from the right-hand-side of this page).- Put you in touch with the local credit union if you would like help in spreading the cost of purchase.

If you would like more information and you live in Wiltshire county, contact Jacky Thomas on (01380) 725670 ext 236. If you live in Swindon contact Kate Robinson on 07876 301617.
